Visited Bird Cow Fish in Crown St, Darlinghurst on Monday night, June 26. The children were away skiing for a week, so out we went to 7 or so meals in 5 days!! No camera, so the photo is courtesy of the Bird Cow Fish website and the Sydney Morning Herald. The food is absolutely delightful. This restaurant used to be in Balmain, and closed many years ago. The owners have taken a well deserved rest and are back with style!
Entrees were pate (indifferent), brandade fritters with mayonnaise on fresh crunchy slaw (superb), potato gnocchi wth prawns, King Island Chicken Livers, and some daily specials. Mains were the signature beef cheek pie (to die for!), fillet steak slices with agro dolce sauce (lovely), a chicken confit with witlof, ocean trout with salsa verde and creamy potatoes. The mixed salad is dressed divinely - it is worth coming for the dressing alone - apparently the secret is golden shallots.
Desserts were a crema catalana, with the smoothness of a creme brulee and a hidden taste that turned out to be fennel - it was delicious! And a sublime chocolate tart, wrapped in shortcrust pastry.
The wine (sorry, cannot remember!) was great, I chose by the glass but was topped up very generously when I ordered another. The service was lovely, the wait-staff friendly and knowledgeable.
Bill was $120 for 2 entrees, 2 mains, 1 dessert, 2 wines and 2 vodkas. Pretty good value!
